How to use cloth wipes
Punkin-Butt wipe recipe
Natural Diaper Area Care Package
Using cloth diapers is a wonderful way to save money, protect the environment and keep your baby healthy. But you would be suprised to find out how many cloth diapering families are still throwing away money on disposable wipes! I confess, I do use disposable wipes at times. They are easy and quick but boy are they pricey! The average box of quality wipes is about $4.50-$5.00! And in our home, when we have them, we use them so they only last about 1.5-2 weeks. Okay, okay- so it seems like it won't break the bank; but let's look at this over the course of your diapering days:
To wipe Baby's bottom clean using disposable wipes, you’ll spend about $4.50/80 wipes,
averaging about 1.5 packs/month.
That’s $6.75/month X 30 months
= $203 for disposable wipes |
This is a conservative estimate and does not factor in using natural wipes. A box of natural
wipes will run you closer to $8 per box- ouch! |
 |
Remember, you will need to continue buying disposable wipes for each child so this figure gets multiplied! Now, we're not saying that sposie wipes aren't convenient and necessary at times. We are suggesting that by using cloth wipes (AKA wipies, washies or wipers) as much as possible you can save a good deal of money. (At least enough to keep Mom in the latest style of shoes *wink*)
How much do cloth wipes cost? Depending on your fabric choices- we have about 6 to choose from!- you can purchase cloth wipes that should last you through at least two children, if not three or four, for less than $30:
To wipe Baby's bottom clean using cloth wipes, you’ll spend about $28 for 24 wipes
That's it. No math. No buying more wipes each month
= $28 for cloth wipes
This calculation is for our least expensive fabric, hemp jersey. But these are our favorite wipes.
They are strong, soft and absorbent!
|
*Wondering how many cloth wipes you'll need? We recommend at least 2 dozen wipes if you do not plan on using disposable wipes. A safe amount is to have a wipe for each diaper plus another 1/2 dozen for messy diapers & other uses.

How to use cloth wipes
Don't worry, cloth wipes will actually SAVE you a step in the diapering changing process. Let's imagine for a second that you are changing a poopy diaper using disposable wipes: You have a pile of nasty poop-covered wipes (it always takes about 3-5 wipes to get Baby clean). What do you do with them? Trash can?-YUCK! Toilet? I suppose that's an okay spot for them (although many packages state the wipes are not supposed to be flushed)...In the diaper? Well, this is our best suggestion as they will get washed along with the diaper and you'll have a clean wad of fuzz to throw away in the end.
Now let's imagine this same situation with cloth wipes: Where do the wipes go? Right in the diaper to get washed!! AND you'll need far fewer cloth wipes since they are so much more effective than disposables.
What about how to wet them? Some of you might be imagining standing there at the sink, cranky, poopy baby in tow, waiting and waiting for the water to heat up. While this is one way of doing it, we suggest that you prepare your wipes ahead of time. Depending on the needs of your baby, you'll probably want to refill your wipe container about every other day. Use plain water or our wonderful diaper wipe solution we've created. Make up a big batch and then all you'll need to do is pour about 1 cup of the solution over the dry wipes, shake and set in a convenient location.
Looking for the perfect container? We suggest using a Tuperware or Rubbermaid container...unless of course you have a stockpile of empty disposable wipe boxes *wink*.
Punkin-Butt Wipe Solution
3/4 cup distilled water
1/4 cup aloe vera juice
3 drops Tea Tree Oil*
1 drop of lavender essential oil or orange essential oil (optional)
- Fill a container (either a disposable wipe container or a plastic storage container from the kitchen) with cloth wipes.
- Mix solution in a small bowl or cup
- Pour over wipes
- Use these wipes through out the day to wipe tushies, hands and faces!
OR
- Mix all ingredients in a small pop-top bottle
- Make sure top is closed tightly and shake well
- Apply directly to Baby's tushie or on cloth wipe
The aloe vera is both soothing and healing while the tea tree oil gently kills bacteria, viruses and fungus that can lead to diaper rash or infection. Makes a great hand and face wash too!
TIP: Mix a large batch of solution to keep on hand. Please refrigerate.
*Do not use tea tree oil full strength! This will result in severe skin irritation. MUST BE DILUTED!
