Prefold Cloth Diaper Folding Instructions

Prefolded Cloth Diaper Folding Instructions

There are countless methods for folding cloth diapers. Each family finds their own way that works best for them and their children. Here are a few example of how we like to fold diapers around here.

Reverse Angel Fold - This is a great way to fold prefolded diapers. It allows for the extra length of the diaper to be evenly distrubted avoiding that unwanted 'bump' and excess bulk. By doing this you can often use the next size up in diapers especially if Baby is between sizes.

Tri Fold w/ optional 'wings' - This is the simplest, most straightforward fold. Although, some find it leads to leaks on the sides so if I opt for this fold, I usally pull the 'wings' around to prevent this. Also a great option for smaller sized diapers. For instance, if Baby is typically wearing a size Regular diaper but you can fit an Infant into their covers and you want to make good use of the diapers this is a good fold for you.

TRI FOLD w/ OPTIONAL 'WINGS'

Lay your cover flat Fold your diaper into thirds with the seam facing up. Fold open the back of the diaper to create 'wings' if you want added protection on the sides. Other wise, skip this step.
Place Baby on the diaper making sure to line him/her up. Bring the front of the diaper up. If you have too much diaper (it is too long) you would want to use the Reverse Angel Fold You can either wrap the cover around at this point and secure the diaper in place or you can use pins or a snappi as demonstrated with the reverse angel fold. (see below)
Secure your wrap or cover and you're set! If you choose to pin or snappi the diaper, you can always leave Baby coverless!

REVERSE ANGEL FOLD

Lay your cover flat Fold the diaper into thirds, lengthwise. Place it in the cover with the seam up. Open the back up to make 'wings'. Lay your child in the diaper lining them up with the cover and diaper layout. Fold up the front of the diaper.
Now fold down any excess diaper. This is often times referred to as the 'bump' and it can cause unwanted bulkiness. By placing your thumbs into the folds of the excess diaper you can pull outward 'fanning' it around. Pull the corners of the diaper around Baby's waist until the 'bump' is smooth and only two layers of diaper.
You can either secure your wrap at this point if it is snug enough or you can pin/snappi the diaper. Pull the back wings forward to overlap the front 'bump'. Secure one side of the snappi. Before releasing your hold on the snappied side, secure the bottom snappi to hold it in place. You should be able to let go at this poing and secure the other wing. It's a good idea to resecure the bottom snappi as it can snag easily if it's too loose. Close up your cover or let Baby go without!
